I. You will succeed in life
What is the dictionary definition of meditation: To meditate means to dwell on anything in thought; to contemplate; to study; to turn or revolve any subject in the mind;
In Joshua 1:8, God said to Joshua, “Do not let this book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful” (NIV).
This was a time of transition in Joshua’s life. Moses had died and now Joshua had to lead the children of Israel into the promised land. It was a challenging responsibility hence God said to Joshua in verse 6 and 7 to be strong, and have courage. He further told him that he will have success wherever he went if he obeys every instruction Moses had given him.
Meditating on the Law allowed the word of God to go deep into his heart. Once the word was in his heart, his faith got stronger and now he had the courage to follow Moses’ instructions.
This required discipline because he had to stay focussed and determined to fulfill his assignment. The same principle applies to the church. If we want to have good success, we must meditate on God’s promises to the body of Christ. It takes discipline and determination to focus on God’s word in the midst of all the noise around us.
Psalm 1:1-3 says, “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by the treams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatsoever he does prospers.
II. Your prayers will be effective
Your prayers will be effective because God’s promises will now dwell in your heart. The word that lives in your heart, is the word that you will be able to pray with the spirit of faith attached to it.
Praying the word of God, is praying His will. Thus your prayers will be answered. In John 15:7, Jesus said, “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you” (NIV). He said the Father will be glorified when your prayers are answered.
III. You will hear God’s voice
When we practice meditating on the Word of God, we are allowing Him to speak to us through the word that is in our hearts. You could be dealing with a very difficult matter and all of a sudden, while you are going about your day, God will give you a revelation on the word you have been meditating on.
He give you insight into how you can solve the problem you have been dealing with. You will know in your heart what you need to do to with your situation. Psalm 119:99 says, “I have more insight than all my teachers for I meditate on your statutes” (NIV). Insight means to have a thorough knowledge or skill.
IV. Strengthens your faith
Romans tells us that faith comes by hearing the word of God. During your time of meditation, you are continously hearing the word and the whole process strenghthen your faith.
V. Meditation brings joy and delight
It is such a blessing to live a life full of joy because your focus is on God’s promises not the negative situations we all deal with.
Psalm 119:14-16 says, I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word” (NIV).
