John 10:27 King James Version (KJV)
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
I. Expect God to speak to you
You must believe that God wants to speak to you. God wants to speak to you because He created you for a purpose. He wants you to fulfill the assignment He created you for. In Jeremiah 29:11 He says, “11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (NIV).
II. You can hear God’s voice
God has given you the ability to hear His voice. Many of us hear God’s voice, however, we don’t recognize it as His voice. For example, have you ever saie these words, “Something told me….” That thing you call “something”, it is the spirit of God speaking to you. In John 10:27, Jesus said, “Mt sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
III. God is always speaking to us
God does not want any of us to make wrong decisions. There are times when we ignore his voice giving us a warning yet we end up doing our own thing. Some have paid a lifetime price because they chose to ignore God’s voice. I remember watching a television show years ago about men who prey on young kids online. This particular gentleman had gone to someone’s house to meet with someone, very young, he met online. Upon arriving at this house, he was met with TV cameras and the police were waiting. When they asked him questions about what he had planned on doing, one of the things he said was, “Something told me not to come. To stop doing these things…” The wisdom of God was speaking to him, but he chose to ignore it.
IV. God speaks to us through His word
God speaks to us through His word that dwells in our spirit, or when we read His word. The word of God has answers for situations we face. Unless you spend time in the word of God, you are missing out on making wise decisions. Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp for my feet,
a light on my path. The word of God gives us direction so that we don’t waste our lives by making wrong choices.
V. Have a personal Bible study routine:
God sounds just like His word. He is not going to tell you to do something that contradicts His word. For example, God is not going to tell you to steal, lie, commit adultery, etc. However, He will tell you to be faithful to your spouse, be kind and loving, etc. Thus, having a habit of personal Bible study will help you to know God’s word and His voice.
VI. Have a prayer routine
When you have a habit of reading and studying the Bible, you won’t struggle with prayer. When you know God’s promises, you will be able to pray God’s promises. And when you pray His promises, your prayers will be effective.
When I was a new believer, I was invited to attend a prayer group. And the prayer leader said to me, “make sure you bring the Bible with you.” She them told us to pray Colossians 1:9-10 and it says,
“For this cause we also, since the day we hear it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge fo his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God” (KJV).
This is how I pray this prayer for myself, my children, and for others: “Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank you that I am filled with the knowlege of your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. I live my life in a manner that is pleasing in your sight. I am fruitful in every good work and I am daily increasing in the knowledge of God, Amen.
Thus, I encourage you to daily expect God to speak to you and believe that He loves you enough to want to talk to you. Spend time in His word through personal Bible study and pray God’s promises over your life and your loved ones; and you will enjoy your walk of Spiritual Growth.
