Spiritual growth is an intentional, lifelong practice to grow in your relationship with God. We can achieve this biblical spiritual growth by spending time with God through personal Bible study, reading and meditating on the Word of God, a consistent prayer life, allow the Holy Spirit to guide your life daily, and living a life of faith in God.
Spiritual Growth should be every believers’ intention in life. When we receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, we become new creations. We start this journey like a newborn baby. Your spirit develops a longing to know God more. The word of God can only satisfy this longing for God.
In order for a newborn to grow, we feed it healthy food and everything that the baby needs for healthy growth. Similarly, believers must feed on the word of God so they can grow in Christ. In reading and studying the word of God, we are being transformed into what God wants us to be.
Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you]” (Amplified).
Is Spiritual Growth for all believers?
Spiritual growth is a normal desire for all believers. God put that desire in our hearts when we receive Jesus Christ into our hearts. Philippians 2:12-13 says, “…work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure” (KJV).
Besides attending Sunday services and weekly Bible studies, I got into the habit of having a personal Bible study. I used Bible study workbooks on some books in the Bible. Some subjects I enjoyed studying and still do are Faith, Love, Marriage, Wisdom, and the Fruit of the Spirit.
As I was learning God’s word, I started praying the scriptures over life challenges, and for my children, marriage, family, finances, my church, and others. The quest for spiritual growth revolutionized my life.

What is a personal Bible study?
Do you have the desire to know God more through His word? Does your heart yearn to know and hear God’s voice? Spending time in regular personal Bible study is your answer.
The Holy Bible is the source of spiritual growth. Spending time alone with God through personal Bible study will inspire spiritual growth.
How to do a personal Bible Study
- Focus on one book of the Bible. There are 66 books in the Bible. The Old Testament has 39 books, and the New Testament has 27 books. I would recommend that you start with a book that has a few chapters such as Colossians, Ephesians, Galatians, Philippians, and James.
- Study a subject of the Bible that you want to learn more about.
What to focus on during a personal Bible study time
- Find out Who wrote the book, Why did they write it, When did they write it and How does it apply to you.
- Focus on one chapter at a time.
- Pay attention to repeated words and phrases.
- Find the meaning of the repeated word and where is that word used in the Bible.
- Write chapter summaries based on your understanding of the chapter.
Daily Prayer
Have a consistent daily prayer life and it will help you achieve your goal for spiritual growth. Prayer is having a conversation with God. Prayer includes praying God’s promises over your life and for your family; Praying or making affirmations about who you are in Christ and also praying about the challenges in your life and expect God to answer your prayer requests.
Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God” (Amplified). Prayer is instrumental in our lives.
Jesus said in Luke 18:1, “Also [Jesus] told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not to turn coward (faint, lose heart, and give up)” (Amplified).
Mark 1:35 says the following about Jesus, “And in the morning, long before daylight, He got up and went out to a deserted place, and there prayed” (Amplified).
What are the benefits of Spiritual Growth?
You will know God personally
Spiritual Growth and Knowing God for yourself: Knowing God for yourself is the best thing you can ever do for your life. God wants us to know Him. Knowing God is knowing His Word. You will know God’s promises for your life so no one can deceive you.
You will resist the devil with God’s word. Therefore, studying the Bible to enhance spiritual growth and to know God is necessary. Here is what the Bible says about the devil who is a thief: “The thief comes only in order to steal and to kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows” John 10:10 (AMP).
It is important for you to know and understand that Jesus came so you can live an abundant life. It is God’s will for you to have an abundance of joy, peace, prosperity, health, a happy and blessed family, children who are happy. However, there is a devil out there who wants to interfere with God’s plan. So, take the time to know what the word of God says about you so you can live a victorious life.
You will know God personally. The more you spend time in His Word, the more you will seek His counsel for the challenges you may face in your life. In Matthew 4:4 Jesus stated that we do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God.
You will know God’s voice
Spiritual Growth and Knowing God’s voice: God speaks to us through His word. As you continue to spend time in the word, you will know His voice.
Hebrews 1:1-2 says, “God in sundry times and in divers manners spake unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds” (KJV).
You will grow in your faith in God
Spiritual Growth and Growing in Faith: Your faith in God will get stronger. The Bible says, “So faith comes by hearing [what is told], and what is heard comes by the preaching [of the message that came from the lips] of Christ (the Messiah Himself)” Romans 10:17, (AMP).
When you spend time in the word of God, you will hear Him speak to you through His word. As a result, your faith in God will get stronger and stronger. You will have the strength and courage to trust God when you are dealing with difficult circumstances.
You will have a direction in life
Spiritual Growth and Guidance: The word of God provides guidance and answers to every situation or circumstance in life.
Psalm 119:105 says God’s word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. So, God’s word will help you decide in agreement with His word.
You will have a peaceful life
Spiritual Growth and Peace: You will have peace regardless of what’s going on in your personal life, or in this world. You will have peace because God’s promises you that when you need healing, He has already provided it for you; He promised to supply your needs; He promised to protect you;
However, He will not make you trust Him or spend time with Him. It is your responsibility to find out what the Bible says about your life, believe it, and you will be on your journey to Spiritual Growth.
