What is the SOAP Bible study method?
SOAP Bible study method stands for scripture, observation, application, and prayer. You select a passage of scripture, or a verse and follow each step.
How does the SOAP Bible study method work?
Scripture: Read a passage or a verse three times. Take your time to write the passage or the scripture from that chapter that speaks to your heart.
Observation: How does this scripture or passage speak to you? What do you believe God is speaking to you? Can you apply this scripture to your life? How has your life changed?
Application? Take your time to write in your journal how you are going to apply this passage of scripture in your life.
Prayer: Write it in a prayer form and pray it daily and. Pray the scripture with the spirit of thanksgiving. “Lord I thank you that………”
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours” Mark 11:24 (NIV).
SOAP Method Bible study examples:
Example 1
Scripture: Proverbs 4: 5-6 (KJV)
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Observation: I am to trust God with every circumstance in my life. I seek God’s help and guidance through prayer. I sit and listen after I finish praying. He will give me direction through another scripture, or an give me an understading of what I need to do.
Application: I have a tendency to want to take care of things for myself. I can stay all night worrying about my situation and I think I will know what to do. But this scripture is telling me to trust God, and He will give me the answer that will solve my problem. I realize that I have to discipline myself to seek God’s help in my life. He promised that he will give me direction. I will no longer try to come up with a solution or stay up all night worrying about my life.
Prayer: I trust the Lord with all my heart. I do not lean on my own understanding. I acknowledge God with every situation, and He promised to give me direction.
“Lord I entrust this situation to you, _____________ (be specific), I do not want to make a wrong decision. I thank you that you promised that you will give me direction. I receive your direction, in Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
Example II
Scripture: Romans 12:1-2 (NIV)
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God-this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Observation: To be in God’s perfect will for my life, I offer my body as a living sacrifice. To offer my body as a living sacrifice means that I won’t do what I want to do to please my flesh. Instead, I will choose not to think like the world, but to think like God. The word of God is God’s thoughts.
Application: I will change my way of thinking in every area of my life. Adopt God’s way of thinking by renewing my mind with the word of God.
Prayer: I present my body as a living sacrifice. Holy and pleasing to God. I do not conform to the ways of this world, but I am transformed by the renewing of my mind with the word of God. So, I know and follow God’s perfect will for my life.
